2022-08-15T08:55:26-04:00

What exactly is a vocation? “The definition of the word vocation is “a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation.” The word vocation originated in Middle English from Old French, or from Latin vocatio, from vocare ‘to call’. A call? From whom? By cell phone? From a friend, a parishioner a priest, a divine call from God? God often calls people to a religious vocation but sometimes we do not hear God’s voice or call. If we do hear an inkling of a religious vocation, our response might be “Who Me?” or “I am certainly not worthy.” Or [...]

2022-08-15T08:44:22-04:00

Curious about a Roman Catholic religious vocation? A vocation is a divine call from God. God does not contact us directly by phone or email, but often in prayer, in reflection, in quiet discernment. There are a variety of means for us to begin to hear God’s call. Reading a spiritual book or a blog post, visiting a website of a spiritual organization, or even visiting a Facebook page. Yes, religious organizations today use Facebook, and even Twitter and Instagram to share the message about their organization, their members, and their work. Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ- Corpus Christi

2022-06-21T09:26:39-04:00

This solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also called Corpus Christi, honors the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The day is observed either on a Thursday or a Sunday following Trinity Sunday. Corpus Christi means “Body of Christ” in Latin and refers to the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation—the consecration, transformation of the substances of bread and wine into the actual body and blood of Christ. We Catholics believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. "In 1551, the Council of Trent declared that the doctrine of transubstantiation is a dogma of faith[47] and stated that [...]

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

2022-06-10T08:27:59-04:00

Over the years, catechists, teachers, and parents have used images and objects to convey the mystery and reality of the Most Holy Trinity. Some use a three-leaf clover, with the three petals united into one. Another image some use is that of coffee, with cream and sugar added; three distinct items but one cup of coffee. I would often gaze at a beautiful tree behind my house and ponder and reflect on one large branch that was divided into three segments, reminding me of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But none of these images really reflect the reality of the [...]

The Great Solemnity of Pentecost

2022-06-06T16:55:20-04:00

On Sunday, June 5th the Catholic Church, and other Christian churches too, celebrate the great Solemnity of Pentecost. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells us how tongues of fire descended on the twelve apostles and disciples of Jesus, and how they were filled with the Holy Spirit, received the gift of tongues, and began to speak in different tongues. The reading from the first Letter of Paul, Corinthians 12, reminds us that there are various kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit, different forms of service but the same Lord… and goes on to say that for each [...]

Golden Jubilees at Daylesford Abbey

2022-06-06T16:48:31-04:00

This year, two men who are Norbertines at Daylesford Abbey are celebrating their Golden Jubilee. Fr. Richard Antonucci O. Praem. and Fr. James Rodia O.Praem. are commemorating the 50th Anniversary of their ordination to the priesthood. Fr. Antonucci and Fr. Rodia were ordained in 1972. They entered the Norbertine community in 1963 upon graduating from (then) Bishop Neumann High School in South Philadelphia (now Neuman-Goretti). These men heard God calling them to a vocation as Catholic priests at Daylesford Abbey. Both hailed from South Philadelphia. They moved from a close-knit Italian American community to the Norbertine Novitiate at the Norbertine Priory. [...]
