As you may be well aware, Daylesford Abbey is a community of priests and brothers within the Norbertine Order, also called the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré, or Premonstratensians. St. Norbert founded our order in 1120. The Norbertines are the 5th oldest surviving religious order within the Catholic Church. This year, we celebrate 900 years of the Norbertine Order.
St. Norbert of Xanten was born around 1080. After an accident while riding a horse, St. Norbert found himself looking to repent and live a simple life. He soon laid the groundwork and foundation of this new religious order, choosing the teachings of St. Augustine as the “guiding light” for this new community.
As Norbertines, we live together in community, leading a simple, common life (communio) and practice common prayer. Each Norbertine takes a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience to an abbot and lives together in Abbeys across continents.
We celebrate our 900th year as a religious community in 2020. To celebrate, Daylesford Abbey will hold the opening Jubilee in the United States on November 28, 2020. We will hold a prayer and musical celebration at 7:00 pm in partnership with St. Norbert Parish. Please check back for more details about the extravaganza and how to comply with COVID-19 guidelines.
